Due to enter service next year, Royal Caribbean's first 220,000 ton, 5,400 passenger Genesis ship may be delayed. Reports are indicating that there are several aspects of the construction that are behind schedule. According to Cruise Business Online, The delays are due to logistics and planning issues which could possibly impact the second ship in the series as well.
Aker Yards has apparently issued three profit warnings since June due to problems in Finland with their ferry building operations where one ferry was delivered three months behind schedule.
The reported problems with the Genesis build include some of the 600 ton sections of the ship not being properly fitted out with cabling and plumbing as they should have been. This work will then have to be done once the section is in place which will require more time to complete. Also, some of the completed cabin modules have been delivered to the shipyard and are sitting in the parking lots exposed to the cold weather which may damage the finished woodwork and laminates in the cabins.
In response, Aker Yards issued a press release stating that the delivery date for the first Genesis ship has not changed. Autumn 2009 is still the expected target. We'll see what happens.
